Spicy Pear Compote with Porridge

This week marks Breakfast Week, a national campaign, which has been running since 2000 to promote the importance of making time to eat breakfast. I too wanted to get involved and share with you my Spicy Pear compote. It is delicious served warm over a bowl of steaming hot porridge, but can also be served as a dessert over ice cream, or in a crumble or pie dish. Heck serve it with cheese if you like, it is that good!

Now, I have to admit I am rubbish when it comes to breakfasts. I often wake up far too late, and then find myself frantically rushing around the house trying to get ready so that I am able to catch my tube on time. There have been too many times when I have lasted until lunchtime with only a cup of coffee to fill my belly….it’s bad I know! I was recently complaining to my colleague about how I was finding it difficult to lose a bit of weight, despite resisting the endless supply of cakes and biscuits on offer in our work kitchen. She was surprised to hear that I had been skipping out on breakfast and told me that one of her nutritionist friends had advised her that it really helps to lose weight, and maintain weight loss, and that it was important not to eat the same thing every day, as our bodies get used to it. Taking on the advice I was given, I have started to plan ahead. I make sure there are always bananas and yoghurt in the house, so that I can grab and go on those days that I am rushing around. I have also bought tupperware, and store cornflakes and granola in the office so that I can eat at my desk. If I get up early enough I make porridge, or boil a couple of eggs, or scramble them, or simply mash up some avocado with chilli flakes and spread on toast, and if all else fails I have found that Pret and EAT offer some great breakfasts. I am definitely starting to feel better for it. On the weekends, my husband always makes poached eggs on toast, and when we are feeling very indulgent, a full english. But I am always on the hunt for new and exciting ways to liven up my morning meal. So tell me, what would be your ideal breakfast meal?

Spicy Pear Compote with Porridge

Cook Time: 25 minutes

Serving Size: 1

Spicy Pear Compote with Porridge

  • 4 pears, peeled, core removed and diced
  • 50-100ml water
  • 25g brown sugar
  • 25g butter
  • 1/2 lemon, juice only
  • 1/4 nutmeg, freshly grated
  • pinch ground cinnamon
  • pinch chilli flakes
  • pinch saffron

  1. Place saucepan on medium heat. Add butter and sugar, and stir.
  2. When the butter begins to melt, add the pears and the remaining ingredients and stir.
  3. Lower heat and simmer for 20 minutes, or until the pears have softened. If the mixture is too watery, turn up the heat to dry up the liquid as you want it to caramelise and coat the pears. If too dry, add a little more water.
  4. When the pears have softened and the liquid has caramalised, remove from the heat and serve over your bowl of porridge.

Thank you Kate! I hope you enjoy eating it as much as I do. Ofcourse the addition of chilli flakes is not everyone’s cup of tea, so feel free to omit it. The warming spices against the caramelised sugary pears are just as tasty.

I love porridge and love different things in it. I really really don’t like pears though, although I would give it a go – the chilli flakes sound like an interesting addition!
