Halloween Cupcakes

I don’t often bake cupcakes, unless my niece is over, but today I felt like being creative and decorate themed Halloween cupcakes. I scoured the internet and drew on inspiration from sites such as Bakerella and BBC Good Food. I planned what designs I wanted to create, compiled a shopping list and began baking. I kept the design and ingredients simple so that even a novice like me can do it.

Spider Cupcakes

Spider Cupcakes

Ingredients

You will need the following to decorate the cupcakes:

  • Chocolate cupcakes
  • Chocolate buttercream – I used Betty Crocker’s chocolate fudge icing to save on time
  • Dark chocolate sprinkles – I used Cake Angels brand available in Lakeland and major supermarkets
  • Liquorice catherine wheels, cut up to make eight small legs per cupcake
  • Red smarties
  • White jelly beans

Method

  1. Use a palette knife to ice the cupcakes, making a dome shape with the buttercream.
  2. With a sharp knife, make small incisions in the cakes and slot in the liquorice wheels to create the spider legs.
  3. Scatter dark chocolate sprinkles all over the icing.
  4. For the eyes, push two red smarties into the icing, towards the front of the cupcake.
  5. For the fangs, quarter the white jelly bean and place two of them into front of the spider cupcake (see picture).
